As a wedding photographer, it’s my job to find what makes each couple unique and capture it on camera. In fact, it’s my greatest honor to photograph you in a way that makes you feel wholly and completely yourself. Because I believe that your wedding should reflect your personality and style as much as possible, starting with your venue! These San Antonio wedding venues are some of my personal favorites, and they’re each aesthetically unique and exceptionally well-run. Is it premature to pour yourself a glass of champagne? I don’t think so. Because you might be about to find your dream venue.
San Antonio Wedding Venues: Museums, Gardens, Hotels, and More
The McNay Art Museum
Did you know that the McNay Art Museum was the first ever contemporary art museum in Texas? Now, it’s a gorgeous property with 23 acres of gardens and an impressive collection of artwork. As a photographer, I pay special attention to beautiful spaces that work well for portraits, and the McNay is overflowing with them. I love the front yard, courtyard, and all the lovely corners of the Spanish Colonial Revival-style home.
No matter what kind of wedding you’re planning, the McNay has a space for you. It’s especially good for large weddings, since the McNay has a huge—and beautiful—reception space with plenty of parking. The only thing to note is that you’ll have to get ready at another location. The Veranda
The Veranda is a quiet oasis in the heart of San Antonio. Everything about it feels grounded and peaceful, encouraging people to enjoy the beautiful grounds. The stone buildings give the property a European feel. There are multiple spaces you can choose from for your ceremony, making every wedding here feel distinct and personal. The large reception hall is full of windows that invite warm, natural light.
After shooting a few weddings here, I advise couples to plan their golden hour portraits a bit earlier than actual golden hour. The venue is surrounded by trees, which gives it that homey, secluded feeling. But the trees can block the sunlight, which means we need to capture those portraits before the light disappears! Additionally, the getting ready spaces here are small. If you have a large wedding party, or simply want space to spread out, I recommend getting ready at a hotel or Airbnb nearby.
Hotel Emma
Have I ever mentioned that I love hotel wedding venues? Because I love hotel wedding venues. I’m going to do my best to keep my gushing about Hotel Emma to a minimum, but I think we all know I’m going to fail. I mean, just look at these photos! Located within The Pearl, Hotel Emma is a stunning boutique hotel wedding venue here in San Antonio. If you want to know more about Boutique Hotel Wedding Venues and why I am just a little obsessed with them, read this blog! But for now, let’s focus on Hotel Emma.
First of all, the staff is a dream to work with. As a San Antonio wedding photographer, I pride myself on being able to work easily and respectfully with any wedding day team. But the staff here truly goes above and beyond. Second, the library. Whether or not you’re a bookworm, you will fall in love with the dark paneled library with its moody lighting. It’s a popular spot for first looks and private vows!
Hotel Emma has multiple ceremony locations depending on the size of the wedding. The large suite with the balcony is often used for smaller weddings or receptions, while larger weddings take place in the courtyard in front of the fountain! While the hotel has a beautiful indoor reception space, I recommend having your dance floor outside in the courtyard. There’s just something about dancing beneath the open sky.
Lastly, Hotel Emma offers easy access to one of the prettiest sections of the San Antonio River. I always suggest leaving some extra time for sunset portraits, since Hotel Emma is downtown and the buildings can block the light. But honestly? Blue hour portraits in front of the hotel are just as beautiful to me.
The Thompson Hotel
While we’re on the note of hotel wedding venues, I have to mention The Thompson Hotel. San Antonio is known for its old world aesthetic, but that vibe isn’t for everyone, which is why The Thompson is such a welcome change of pace! Located along the Riverwalk, this hotel has seven spaces for celebrations that range in style and size to fit every need. It’s got stunning skyline views, five star dining, and comfortable suites for getting ready and hosting guests.
I dream of photographing not just a wedding, but a full wedding weekend here. Just picture a welcome party at the pool, before transitioning to drinks at the Moon’s Daughter, the skyline bar on the 20th story. The next day, you can host your ceremony in the Solana Foyer with its floor to ceiling windows, and your reception in the Solana Ballroom—a blank space for you to design to your liking. It’s perfect, and I don’t think anyone can convince me otherwise.
The Skyline
If you want clean lines, open spaces, and stunning views, you want to get married at The Skyline. This San Antonio wedding venue is minimal and sleek, making it a perfect blank space for any wedding. You can flip it into something entirely custom, or lean into the minimalism to create a simple, classic design.
It boasts spacious, well lit getting ready suites, a large rooftop terrace for the ceremony, and a reception hall with dozens of oversized windows. Nothing beats golden hour portraits on the deck with the cityscape in the background. I mean, it’s called The Skyline for a reason! The Venue at Devil’s River Distillery
If you want rooftop portraits, but don’t quite vibe with the minimalist design of The Skyline, check out the Venue at Devil’s River Distillery. Instead of being bright and open, the Devil’s River Distillery is dark and moody, feeling like a secret speakeasy. Because of this, make sure whatever photographer you work with is comfortable shooting in low light! Whenever I photograph a wedding here, I bring an extra flash to make sure I capture every detail. You might think an extra light would distract from the moody vibes, but it actually enhances it! Flash photography is super popular right now for that exact reason. If you love high contrast photos with sharp lines and bold color, you’ll love flash photos at the Devil’s River Distillery.
And of course, I can’t move on without mentioning the rooftop. You can see downtown San Antonio spreading out behind you, making it the most incredible location for golden hour portraits.
This venue is great for smaller weddings, or even just a reception after a church ceremony. And if you do host everything here, I recommend getting ready off-site, since the getting ready suites are on the smaller side. And lastly, because it’s located downtown, you aren’t always allowed to use sparklers. But don’t worry, a bubble exit at this venue is just as cute! A few strategically placed bubble guns makes your exit feel magical—trust me.
The Gardens at West Green
The Gardens at West Green is an ideal space for an intimate outdoor wedding. Tucked away in a little corner of San Antonio, this venue can host up to 80 people. Every time I step into this space, I feel like I’m on the set of Bridgerton. It’s secluded, romantic, and simply beautiful.
The venue has two covered outdoor spaces that can be used for either the ceremony or reception. Most couples choose to have the ceremony on the lawn, and I don’t blame them. The lawn is lush and shaded by a beautiful oak tree. The patio space is concrete, making it the best place for a seated dinner and dance floor.
San Antonio Botanical Gardens
I will never get enough of this venue! I love spaces that offer variety throughout the wedding day, so each event—from getting ready to the final send-off—feels distinct. The San Antonio Botanical Gardens deliver that and so much more. The gardens encompass 41 acres in the middle of the city, and it’s beautiful all year round. You really don’t need to add much to the gardens to create an immersive experience for your guests.
You can host your wedding on the Greehy Lawn, in the conservatory, amphitheater, or the Betty Kelso Center. Every space is unique and effortlessly beautiful. Jack Guenther Pavilion at the Briscoe Western Art Museum
The Jack Guenther Pavilion at the Briscoe is right along the San Antonio river with water views all around. You can choose from a wide variety of indoor and outdoor spaces for the ceremony and reception depending on the size and style of your wedding. Whether you want a romantic garden wedding or something more modern, there is a space that will fit your style. You can even get after hours access to the museum!
While there are no getting ready spaces on the property, there are many hotels nearby! This is an especially great venue if you are hosting out of town guests and want to give them the full San Antonio experience. You can get a trolley from any of the hotels to the venue, getting iconic views of the city and river on your way. And for local guests who choose to drive, there is a parking garage right across the street.
This is the kind of venue that would truly benefit from having a planner. It is a large space with many moving parts, and requires you to plan ahead. Tapatio Springs
I’m reaching a little outside of San Antonio with this one, but I promise it will be worth it. You know how I said in the beginning of this blog that I want your wedding to feel as you as possible? Well, that can only happen if you find a venue that fits your vibe! Tapatio Springs offers a different aesthetic than many of the other San Antonio wedding venues on this list. It is a classy resort located in the Hill Country, just under an hour from San Antonio.
Tapatio Springs has everything you need for an unforgettable wedding. Multiple beautiful ceremony locations. A perfect place for cocktail hour. A choice to host your reception in the grand ballroom or out on the green. And, to top it all off, it has plenty of rooms so guests can stay on site! This is an ideal venue for a Texas destination wedding, or just a weekend escape from the city.
Red Berry Estate
If you want your wedding to feel luxurious, old-money, and just a touch French, you’re going to love Red Berry Estate. The historic mansion was built in 1952, and is home to spacious getting ready suites, a large ballroom for ceremonies or receptions, and even an authentic casino! The entire property overlooks a lake, and the grounds are perfectly tailored for ceremonies, receptions, or a standing cocktail hour.
Red Berry Estate has partnered with Rosemary Catering to provide custom dinner and drink menus, ensuring that everything tastes and feels just as good as it looks. And I can speak from personal experience here. Rosemary Catering is so good. Like, I still think about their food weeks after I’ve eaten it.
The Southwest School of Art
I always struggle to describe the Southwest School of Art. It’s equal parts classic, old world San Antonio, art museum, and medieval castle. If you don’t believe me, look at the photos. But be warned! You might just fall in love with it.
If you’re planning for a smaller guest list, you can get married at the on-site chapel, a beautiful stone building with vibrant stained glass windows and tapestries. If you’re planning something a little larger, the courtyard is everything you need! Flat pavestones allow for even ground while still feeling historic, and the permanent pavilion provides a natural focal point for the ceremony. You can host the reception outside in the courtyard, or move it inside the old stone building. Every wedding here feels steeped in romance and history.
