Every one of my couples is near and dear to my heart, and Angely & Anup are no exception. Having lived and traveled through India, I carry a deep love and appreciation of the culture. It’s always been a dream of mine to photograph an Indian wedding ceremony in all its wondrous, breathtaking glory. So being entrusted to capture their Indian wedding portraits at Laguna Gloria in Austin was a highlight of 2023.
In my early 20’s, I spent three months living in northern India doing different nonprofit work. While there, I immediately fell in love with the food, and have such fond memories from my travels. I loved getting to talk to Angely & Anup about the different cuisine found throughout all the different regions. Anup’s mom makes incredible Dosa (a favorite I haven’t had since my travels). And I loved hearing all about Kerala, India where Angely is from.
Unfortunately, I was already booked for their wedding date. However, I feel incredibly honored they still asked me to capture their engagement photos and formal wedding portraits.
With historical architecture, elegant garden pathways, and artful details around every corner, Laguna Gloria is a hidden jewel among downtown Austin — and one of my favorite Austin engagement session locations. For Angely & Anup, Laguna Gloria was the perfect setting for their engagement photos and their Indian wedding portraits. Angely loved how the location reminded her a little of her home in Kerala, India. And as local Austinites, Angely had even taken some art classes there.
Its rich history and enchanting beauty provided the perfect setting to honor their culture and celebrate their modern city romance.
The lush green fronds lining some of the pathways provided a stunning backdrop for their formal Indian wedding portraits – and elegantly contrasted the white and gold fabric of their wedding clothes. Between the grand pillars and manicured garden surroundings, every second of their session felt like stepping into their very own enchanted love story.
In India, clothing styles vary greatly from region to region and sometimes city to city. Angely’s dress was traditional Kerala style. Every region wraps a Sari a little differently, and there was a team of women that helped prepare Angely for the session to ensure she looked perfect. Throughout the shoot, I took extra care in making sure all the pleats laid correctly since I knew from my time in India it’s an important part of the dress.
Indian wedding tradition calls for a Mehndi (or Henna) ceremony to be held the night before the wedding as a way of wishing the bride good health and prosperity. So Angely came to the session with traditional henna already done. Other beautiful elements included the Jasmine flowers in her hair and the traditional bangles around her wrists.
She was absolutely radiant the entire session.
At the heart of the Laguna Gloria venue in downtown Austin is the historic Driscoll Villa built in 1916. Despite being an older building, the natural light coming through the vintage windows is swoon-worthy. The inside of Laguna Gloria has a way of bringing magic to every session, and it is easy to see why it’s a beloved Austin venue.
“Wow, these are outstanding! Thank you so much, Leah! You are the best!!”
One of the best parts of being an Austin wedding photographer is honoring the cultures and traditions close to my couples’ hearts. Being a part of an Indian wedding has always been the dream. From my own time immersed in their culture to all the beautiful symbolism woven into each tradition, I will happily spend 12+ hours capturing every colorful second. While I haven’t been able to cross it off the wish list quite yet, I feel so privileged to have played a part in Angely & Anup’s beautiful love story. And here’s to manifesting more Indian weddings in 2024 ✨
